Sam’s printing workshops …
Dear Reader,
Just a quick rave about the workshop on reduction printing I attended last week at Sam’s studio. IT WAS FAB!

I’m looking forward to this Tuesday’s session – Surfaces to print: under collage, over collage, cut-outs, printing obnto fabric.
The class runs from 10am to 4pm, 30 mins for lunch – bring your own. ( and costs just £40.00 per session or less if you can prove benefits)
Workshops are:
02/08/11 – Heat press techniques
09/08/11 – stitching into printed surfaces
16/08/11 – felt making
23/08/11 – Needle felting
30/08/11 cutting and jointing with felt.
You would be advised to ring Sam as places are limited

Dear Reader,Last week, Rupert Murdoch was just getting ready to complete his BSkyB power grab. He thought he had just one or two more hurdles to get over. Since then, his plans have unravelled in a way he could never have imagined.
The truth about Murdoch’s newspaper’s heartless treatment of crime victims, the 7/7 Now it’s time to make sure we win a people-powered victory over Murdoch. If we can get over 100,000 names on our petition by the time we hand it in to the government tomorrow, they’ll know they need to act to rein Murdoch in. Please forward this message to your friends and family and ask them to sign the petition, calling for a proper public inquiry into phone-hacking and for the BSkyB deal to be stopped now: Or The final government inquiry into the BSkyB deal ends tomorrow at noon. [3] We’ll be delivering our petition – together with our giant Murdoch puppets and our friends at Avaaz – to Jeremy Hunt and David Cameron a few minutes before the deadline passes. The government says we should believe Murdoch’s promises that he’ll respect media independence. [4] Why should we trust promises from a media baron whose papers are under police investigation? Let’s prove to the government that the public won’t fall for more phony Murdoch promises. Please help make sure our petition is as large as possible before the deadline tomorrow: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/murdoch-deal-petition Time and time again, as we work together to campaign for a fairer, greener, This could be our chance to finally level the playing field and get politicians answering to voters not media barons – let’s work together to seize it! Please press forward on this message and ask your friends and family to add their names to the petition now: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/murdoch-deal-petition Or spread the word on Facebook: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/murdoch-deal-facebook Thanks |
The Pride – Alexi Kaye Campbell
Went to see THE PRIDE at Sheffield Studio Theatre, WOW!
I loved the play: sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes thoughtful sometimes harrowing but always engaging.
With a cast of 4, THE PRIDE manages to convey the essence of same-sex relationships over a 50 year period – No mean feat with only 3 items of furniture on set. Chronicling how times have changed, it offers a witty, no-punches pulled commentary on gay life.
It is on at the Sheffield Theatre until Saturday 1616th July – If you can get there I urge you to do so …..
Bigotry and Discrimination
Dear Friend,
I just signed a petition asking the FIFA to give Nigerian Football Federation the red card for kicking women off the national team “not because they were bad players, but because they were lesbians.”
This week, the coach of Nigeria’s women’s football team told the New York Times that she has dealt with “the big problem” of lesbianism on the team. She made her point clear: love between two women is a “dirty issue”.
But there’s something we can do about it. In the battle against bigotry and discrimination, FIFA, football’s world governing body, has real moral authority, and they can use that authority to take a clear stand against this outrageous discrimination.
With the Women’s World Cup launching this weekend, will you take a moment to ask FIFA president Joseph Blatter to play by FIFAs rules, and investigate the harassment and termination of players “suspected” of being gay.
Eva Rothschild & Phyllida Barlow
Last night saw the first public artist conversation at the Hepworth. The auditorium was full and a waiting list employed.
Eva Rothschild in conversation with Phyllida Barlow, they talked for around 90 minutes on Rothschild’s exhibition “Hot touch”. A thoroughly enjoyable dialogue.
As is usual for me it raised points for further consideration;
Plinth ‘v’ stand – does the architecture add to or detract from the sculpture? To what extent does this depend on environment?
Placement of the object: is the object placed in relationship to the eye? Body? Site?
Is the work made for the place? or Made and then placed?
Notion labour ‘v’ value: Does the art have a greater value if the artist has spent a considerable time in the making? Does this include thinking time? Current trends? Personal Evaluation?

Jaume Plensa
At the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) untill 25/09/11.
This exciting artist offers words and images for thought, forethought and afterthought.
I enjoyed his work immensely, It has the interactive quality that I have come to expect of the YSP.
Structure and Material
Well I never! An art event in Yorkshire (YSP) that exhibits 3 women artists – and this is not the Hepworth, me granddad would’ve been turning in his grave.
These significant artists: Clare Barclay, Karla Black and Becky Beasley, investigate the way we create meaning through form. That’s what it says in the brochure.
I was particularly engrossed in Barclays “Quick Slow” work. Each repetition was very slightly different, but when viewed as a whole the changes are not identifiable.
It is a good walk to the long gallery – although I caught the free bus!
The exhibition is on until 26th June, 2011. Moving to Spike Island, Bristol on 9/7/11 then The New Art Gallery, Walsall on 30/09/11.
Eva Rothschild
At the Hepworth, until 9th October 2011, a collection of her sculptures in a range of materials. An exploration of the power and meaning of objects.
The Ultimate Self Esteem …
” There is nothing in the whole world so painful as the feeling that one is not liked. It always seems to me that people who hate me must be suffering from some kind of lunacy”

Dear reader,
Please sign a petition demanding that Ugandan President Museveni veto the “Kill The Gays” bill should it be passed in Parliament.
We just learned the “kill the gays” bill- a death sentence for LGBT people in Uganda – could come up for a vote in the next 72 hours if we don’t act now.
Conservative leaders are trying hard to push the bill forward before the millions like us who oppose it have a chance to speak out. If we can create a massive international outcry, there’s a chance to stop this bill from becoming law.
This hateful bill appears to be a political diversion, a way to distract from the legitimate grievances of pro-democracy activists, who have been beaten, teargassed, jailed, and even killed in recent weeks.
There are only days left to make sure your voice is heard. Will you join me in demanding the Ugandan President Museveni veto the “Kill The Gays” bill should it be passed in Parliament. Sign this urgent petition:

Wirksworth Festival
Fantastic Funding News We are delighted that our bid to the Arts Council was successful and that we have secured funding until March 2015. The Arts Council have shown great confidence in the Festival and the award recognises the great progress made over recent years and secures an exciting future ahead. The funding awarded is slightly less than we hoped for and in real terms is less than our previous funding from ACE, so budgets will be tight. We do however have plans in place to grow and diversify our income, to try and reduce the reliance on ACE funding in future.
Trails Weekend 2011 Plans are going well for this years festival. Over 350 visual artists have applied for the Trails Weekend and Curated Programme. Selection is almost complete and artists will be informed of decisions in the next couple of weeks.
Festival Fringe An exciting edition to this years Festival will be the setting up of a Performance Fringe. This will increase opportunities for local performers and producers to put on events as well as encouraging new and exciting work to be brought to town. Registrations for the Fringe will open on May 17th. Community Celebration – 25 September If you enjoyed last year’s procession and Festival Finale in the churchyard – now’s the time to join in planning for this year. We’ve got some great ideas but nothing’s finalised.

Women died for this
This budget announced a review of all employment regulations in order to encourage growth and reduce “burdensome” red tape. Government has stated that regulations will be scrapped unless “a very good case is made for them to stay”. As part of this review, the government has recently launched the ‘Red Tape Challenge’ website to seek the views of the public on which regulations should stay and which should go.
The Fawcett Society is extremely concerned about the ‘Equalities’ section of this site. The government is seeking the public’s views on the 2010 Equality Act. It even asks whether the Act should be ‘scrapped altogether?’
The Equality Act is an extremely important piece of law that brings together all preexisting equality law, including all the provisions enshrined in The Equal Pay Act 1970 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975.
Without this law, public bodies would have no duty to consider how to eliminate unlawful discrimination, including between women and men, and women would not be legally protected from unequal treatment in the workplace.
Any backwards step, let alone a full repeal of this Act, would represent a transgression on the rights of women in the UK today and would severely undermine efforts to achieve equality between women and men in all spheres of life.
Please take 2 minutes to register your comments on the suggestion to scrap the 2010 Equality Act!
